Many customers ask about using the BodipHier natural hair relaxer on previously straightened or coloured hair. So here is a page to answer questions about a familiar range of chemically treated hair.

Since the BodipHier relaxes hair and adds body without the use of harsh chemicals like lye, it can be used on hair that has been chemically treated, provided that the damage has not dried or weakened the hair extensively.

However, this natural relaxer product is not a “repair kit” that will correct or improve any previous permanent damage that was caused by the chemicals that were used before the BodipHier application.

Never apply any type of relaxer on already damaged (weakened, dried out, breaking) hair. However for already damaged hair, you can safely continue to apply a BodipHier treatment only on the healthier re-growth, as all of the damaged hair grows out. The BodipHier natural relaxer allows you to safely transition from chemically damaged hair to 100% “BodipHied” hair — restoring hair to its healthiest, most lovely, and straightest results.

You can use the BodipHier relaxer over hair that has been previously relaxed with Copa products or with sodium, calcium, lithium, or guanidine hydroxide (lye or non-lye) relaxers — in fact the BodipHier has been shown to be compatible with all of these traditional hair relaxers.

However, the BodipHier is not recommended over “curls” or “thio” (ammonium thioglycolate) based products. Ammonium thioglycolate is the chemical that’s commonly used to create a curly body wave “perm” on naturally straight hair. Applying a natural Bodiphier relaxer over a perm may not reverse the curly effects of a chemical permanent wave process. These “thio” based chemical products are also used in various “Japanese/ionic/thermal” salon hair straightening services. For naturally dry or ethnic hair types, this chemical can dry hair out so much that extensive moisture is constantly required or the hair will break off. However, the BodipHier is excellent when applied over hair that has been previously relaxed with all Copa products.

Remember, the BodipHier will not make your hair perfectly “pin straight”, as with chemical relaxers. It relaxes curl about 85% for virgin or resistant-kinky hair, and it relaxes average curly hair about 90%, so it’s very effective. After every shampoo, hair easily becomes smooth and silky straight from the use of thermal styling tools such as a warm blow dryer and heated straightening iron. A chemical-free BodipHier permanently softens and loosens (relaxes) the curl patterns in hair, with no worries causing damage, or over-processing on previously relaxed hair.

When you touch up your hair’s re-growth with the relaxer, you can easily customize your permanent results. To relax your curl further, start at the re-growth and apply the relaxer fully throughout your entire head again, and your hair will become even straighter. Or, if you don’t want any further hair straightening, you would touch up only the curly re-growth with the relaxer instead. In fact with continued use, the natural BodipHier safely keeps hair permanently smoother and uniformly relaxed.

There is no further harm for a professional to apply a chemical relaxer over hair that already has BodipHier in it (but why would you want to?), because the BodipHier will not harm or dry out your hair.

Always relax your hair first with the BodipHier, then wait a week before applying a new permanent or semi-permanent colour. This ensures that you’ll get a “true colour” result, and there is nothing coating the hair that blocks the relaxer’s penetration and processing.

Wait 2 weeks after a fresh new colour before applying a new BodipHier treatment. For people who have already coloured their hair, the BodipHier application will not lift or change the colour. It will not cast a yellowish or greenish tint to grey hair either.

To avoid unpredictable interactions between the BodipHier and certain chemicals or compounds, do not apply the BodipHier over hennas, vegetable dyes, or “Herbatint” colour ranges. All of these “healthier” hair colouring products contain the chemical p-Phenylenediamine (made by DuPont), a chemical which is also known to cause allergic skin reactions.

Do not apply BodipHier over bleach, or recently bleached hair. Bleach (peroxide) is very harsh, damaging, and drying to hair, since it strips out all the hair’s pigment to bleach it white/blonde. Bleach can cancel the desired benefits of the natural relaxer, and the results are unpredictable.

However, if only selected strands of hair has been highlighted or foiled (with bleach), and the majority of hair is in otherwise good condition, you can expect effective results by using the BodipHier according to the application instructions, using the plastic cap method for highlighted or coloured hair.
